COLOUR RULES MY HEART, COLOUR RULES MY WORLD

Merel finds inspiration in an adventurous trip through Africa. Tuscany in Italy, the plains and hills around Saragossa, Spain, and the desolate splendour of the Alentejo, Portugal, the colours of India. Landscape fades away, only colour and light remain; light is a most essential thing. Merel puts it this way: “First I was enchanted by light, and the whole world was my inspiration. Now there are men all around me, coming very close. He is there, he stays there, and I can’t and won’t ignore him. And though my heart and head are completely filled with colours, there are also words, words meaning signs and marks, impressions which are mine, yours, I paint, paint right from my soul.”

Merel paints “independently”; she is not part of a specific trend or school. She creates and paints her own world, full of colours. Her message is based on a great deal of astonishment and surprise. Leading and suggestive power is typical for her artistic expression. In this way she gets to the soul and heart of her themes very delicately and sensitively. Her paintings evoke a wealth of different experiences, the spectator will be overwhelmed. She paints in an uncomplicated and unsophisticated way, the way she experiences and discovers the world. Time after time one will be an integral part of this. Her paintings are full of subtle fascination and spells, which cause quite a few happy emotions.
