A graduate of both Fine Arts and Design in Ceramics at the Seoul National University in Korea (2011) and Royal College of Art in London, UK (2016), Seoul-born ceramics artist and designer Ahryun Lee has built a career on pushing the boundaries of her chosen medium.
Her shifts with cross-cultural transitions influence on her perspective in ceramics, focusing on materiality she investigates fertile territory of ceramics for experimentation and potential creative speculation within Contemporary Art. A conceptual and experimental approach enables her to play in multiple playgrounds in between Art and Design and Craft whilst exploring numerous creative possibilities in expression.
Color plays a vitally important role in her work, the bold and intricate textures present audience with otherworldly atmosphere. Instinctively driven by senses, in particular tactility, Ahryun creates vivid and almost look alive objects with organic shapes, contrasting colors and patterns with dots, abstract squiggles, stripes et cetera. The audience often felt a sudden urge to touch the curious, sculptural being for emotional interaction. The joyful object captured the essence of her times; her nostalgia towards Childhood reminding the time when we cultivated happiness with naivety.
Her creative purpose is not just only developing personal identity in artistic expression but also to fuel the curiosity and stimulate emotions for viewers to open communication and exchange narratives through the objects. On top of this, Ahryun has an interest in to find the new possibilities in ceramics, in which ways ceramics can develop further beyond its traditional context. While peering into the area between tradition and contemporary, her aim is to create extraordinary scene to create a discourse on the definition of ceramics while blurring the boundaries in every discipline between Art and Design.
Lee has since exhibited internationally in prominent shows such as Design Miami, Salon Art and Design in New York (US), Milan’s Salone del Mobile (IT), Bröhan Museum (DE), Museum of decorative Arts (CZ), Schloss Hollenegg (AT), Collect Art Fair (UK), Beirut Art Fair (LB), Dubai Design Week (DXB).
In addition to this she had various collaborations; the most recent from 2022 to 2023 she has worked with Italian luxury brand Dolce & Gabbana under the DG’s Generation designer project. In London, Fashion industry with fabric development department at Céline, showcase at Zetter hotel and launching unique collections at Koibird during Frieze Week. She had a beautiful exclusive show with Cabana Magazine in Milan during Salone del Mobile and tour show with various ceramic institutions in France. Ahryun was selected for Artist in Residence at Künstlerhaus Stadttöpferei by Dr. Hans Hoch Foundation in Germany, and she was a winner of Future lights in Ceramics from European Ceramic Competition held by Porzellanikon in Germany.
