Pumbaa

Botswana - 2019

Ostensibly a warthog is simply a hog with warts - the clue is in the name. But to see them in the wild close up, they are so much more than that. They are characters from a medieval age - with unruly hair sprouting from everywhere, sinister looking curved tusks and cunning in their every move.

As Disney has done so well with the character - Pumbaa - warthogs should be celebrated for what they are - bad ass and intelligent pigs. If Tarantino needed a hog for a role, it would be a warthog - they are tailor made for his style of casting.

The problem as a photographer, is how to get close enough to portray those facial features and we are still learning here. They really don’t have any affection for humans at all - little do they know what Seth Rogen has done for their celebrity status.

There are places in Africa not to go to try and photograph them, but one area of potential is Chobe on southern side of the Namibia/Botswana border. Their behaviour here in some places offers chances, but one has to hold one’s nerve a little. These “Rock Star” hogs can give you quite a thump if you dont back off.

Hakuna-matata" indeed"
