Layered Balance: The Art of Ingrid Paulussen’s Exploration of Femininity

Opening: Saturday October 5, 2024
Location: Leopoldstraat 45, 2000 Antwerp, Belgium

Ingrid Paulussen has spent 25 years refining her craft, creating three-dimensional portraits that blur the lines between painting and sculpture. Drawing inspiration from Picasso’s freedom, Matisse’s cut-outs, and Mondrian’s geometric forms, Ingrid uses layered materials—particularly paper—to add depth and texture to her works. This unique process transforms her portraits into multi-layered reflections on femininity, identity, and beauty.

Her characteristic “paper line” not only symbolizes symmetry and elegance but also represents the fleeting nature of existence. Ingrid’s work is deeply personal, born from her own exploration of womanhood, which she discovered later in life. Through her portraits, she invites viewers to engage with the complexities of femininity, both its strength and vulnerability.

Paulussen’s art challenges conventional perceptions, balancing between figuration and abstraction, and creating a dialogue between the past and present. Each piece encourages introspection, allowing us to peel back layers and connect with the essence of her subjects.
